We all know nobody’s perfect. (Anyone who thinks they are might be delusional.) There is always room to grow professionally, and it’s up to us to push ourselves to do better, learn more, and improve from our mistakes.

Luckily, event planners have a ton of experience creating to-do lists and setting goals. So becoming a better event planner should be a piece of cake, right? Not all the time. Setting a goal is one thing, but achieving it is another. It’s about looking challenge in the eye and conquering it. It’s about learning new techniques doing better than the last time. And it’s most definitely about stepping outside your comfort zone.

As we come to the end of the year, take some time to reflect on projects from the past 12 months, and maybe do some soul searching to discover ways to turn potential weaknesses into strengths. From there, set realistic goals that you think you can reach in 2018.

Here are a few ways you can work on them!

Set a Timeframe

Setting and reaching a goal is awesome, but giving yourself a timeframe ignites motivation and eliminates and procrastination. (Hopefully.) A year might be too long to accomplish a goal. Give yourself one-two months and if you haven’t made the goal by then, reassess what timeframe works for you.

What to Improve

We’re not going to tell you what goals you need to set (we don’t know you!), but here are a few to think about.

  • Closing New Business: What is the percentage of new business you score once the conversation starts?
  • Client Relationships: Are most of your relationships positive or do you get frustrated with everyone you encounter? (If so, maybe it’s time to find a new profession.) Do you retain your client’s business after your first project?
  • Budgeting Skills: Do you consistently stay under or always go over?
  • Work Life Balance / Scheduling: Is your schedule always overbooked? Do you get stressed out looking at your calendar in the morning? Do you leave time for yourself to read, watch TV, shop, and hang out with your friends?

Add in Checkpoints

If your timeframe is two months to reach a goal to achieve, give yourself a gut check once a week to see how things are going. It’ll keep that goal top of mind and motivate you to achieve it faster.

Continuing Ed

There are so many resources, classes, books, and networking events available to event planners to broaden their horizons. Just because an event prof graduated college doesn’t mean class, tests, and homework should be beneath them. If anything, there’s less pressure post grad and learning is more fun and your choice!
