The idea of a sensory-friendly dance isn’t new, but until Netflix’s original series, Atypical, included one, many people had never heard of a silent disco party.

Atypical is a coming-of-age television series about Sam Gardner, an 18-year-old with autism. In Season 1, Episode 8, “The Silencing Properties of Snow”, the PTA at Sam’s school decided to hold a silent disco prom so that Sam can attend. The exciting part for us is that this episode features our Party Headphones during the dancing scenes!

How do headphones help people with autism?

Many people diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder experience sensory
sensitivity to sounds. They might perceive certain sounds as too intense,
overwhelming, or even painful.*

Using sensory-friendly headphones like ours, they can:

  • regulate the volume
  • switch channels (when available) to choose different music
  • or remove the headphones altogether when they need a break

Why have a silent disco school dance?

Parents and teachers love silent disco parties because the headphones
eliminate the booming music that makes conversation almost impossible. Let’s face it, the purpose of a school dance is to give the kids an opportunity to socialize. Loud noise from audio speakers makes it even harder for kids like Atypical’s Sam. They have a hard enough time talking with peers under quieter circumstances. At a silent disco party, autistic kids are less likely to be stressed out because they can control the music. So, they can participate, feel part of the group and have fun like everyone else.

Accepting everyone!

At Party Headphones we encourage event organizers to find ways, such as silent disco parties, to bring everyone together regardless of their differences, including mental or physical disabilities. We are excited and proud that our Party Headphones were part of Atypical’s sensory-friendly prom episode.

Stay tuned!

We are also happy to announce that Party Headphones will soon be featured in other upcoming shows…You heard it here first!
